The Philological Section fulfills the function of the Catalan language academy the Institut is in charge of. In addition, Article 10 of Law 17/2010, of June 13, on Catalan Sign Language, assigns to the Institut d’Estudis Catalans the role of normative authority in this field, as the academic institution that determines the language rules of Catalan Sign Language and promotes its research and systematization.
